About Derbal Nara (Cockburn Sound)

The Nyungar Warden Katitjin Bidi - Derbal Nara, known as the People’s Ocean Knowledge Trail, is an enlightening educational project focusing on the Nyungar values and significance of Cockburn Sound. This trail is a window into the Nyungar Nyitting (Dreaming), where the Waakal (rainbow serpent), the Creator, is revered.

Nyungar Boodjar (People’s Country)

Derbal Nara means 'Estuary of the Salmon', holding great spiritual significance for the coastal Nyungar. The sea (Wardan) and coastal plain provide vital resources for food, shelter, and cultural practices.

Moort (Family and Relations)

The kinship system within Nyungar culture is foundational, outlining relational dynamics and communal obligations. Totems represent plant or animal ancestors, underscoring a commitment to care and sustainability in Derbal Nara.

Katitjin (Stories and Knowledge)

Katitjin encompasses knowledge from cosmological stories of the Nyitting (Dreaming). Significant narratives detail the creation of Derbal Nara, enriching our understanding of this culturally rich landscape.
